Battle of the bands! One Direction and 5 Seconds Of Summer square up at ARIA Awards as they both perform on stage to a legion of screaming female fans

One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer have plenty of things in common.

They are both boy bands which are made up of attractive musicians and adored by millions of young girls the world over.

On Wednesday night, the two bands proved just how similar they are, with both performing onstage at the ARIA Awards in Sydney, Australia and each taking out a prestigious award each.

Accepting the award for their song Midnight Memories, the quintet took to the stage and said their thank you's for being crowned winners three years in a row.

'Thank you so much, this is an absolute honour, i'ts incredible to be here in Australia.' Louis said as he gripped the ARIA.

'This award is for our fans, coming from the UK it's great having this support in Australia, we can't wait to be back on tour and see you guys in February.' Zayn concluded for the boys.

It didn't take long though for 5 Seconds of Summer to pick up their own highly sort after ARIA for Song Of The Year for their hit She Looks So Perfect.

'This is the first award our parents have actually seen us get apart from participation in swimming or something, so this is very special,' Base guitar player Calum Hood shouted while thanking the crowd.

Coordinating in black and white, the 1D boys arrived on the red carpet earlier on the night.

Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, looked suave as they greeted fans and posed for the cameras.

More impressive than their slick looks though was their performance of Steal My Girl for which the boys switched into more edgy attire.

Harry donned an all-black outfit consisting of jeans and a button-up shirt, Liam wore a black leather jacket reminiscent of Danny from Grease, Louis wore a similar look to Harry, but with black and white sneakers and Niall slipped on a checkered cloth vest.

They sent the crowd wild with their rendition of What I Like About You just days earlier at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles.

And Aussie homegrown talents 5 Seconds Of Summer did it again at the ARIAs on Wednesday.

The four-strong band, made up of Michael Clifford, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin, opened the 28th Aria awards to ecstatic reception with their catchy song, She Looks So Perfect.

Ashton, 20, and guitarist and singer Michael, rocked their fans into a frenzy on a balmy evening.

The T-shirt-wearing boys, who all attended Norwest Christian College, were besieged by fans as they walked the red carpet hours earlier.

As Ashton arrived at the award ceremony with rock star swagger he Told Daily Mail Australia: ‘It feels good [to be back].’
