The Anti-Defamation League is slamming Nicki Minaj’s new music video that features a cartoon dictator version of the female rap star ruling over a fictional regime, which many fans were quick to point out looks a whole lot like Nazi Germany.
“Nicki Minaj’s new video disturbingly evokes Third Reich propaganda and constitutes a new low for pop culture’s exploitation of Nazi symbolism,” Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League and a Holocaust survivor, told FOX411 in a statement. “The irony should be lost on no one that this video debuted on the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the ‘night of broken glass’ pogrom that signaled the beginning of the Final Solution and the Holocaust.”
In the video, the red and black flags with a swastika-like symbol fly through the air and soldiers with arm bands are seen lined up. As the images play in the background, explicit lyrics from Minaj’s song flash on the screen in-time with the music.
The video was released on Friday, though it only began gaining attention on social media over the weekend. The actual anniversary of Kristallnacht is Nov. 9 and 10.
“This video it is insensitive to Holocaust survivors and a trivialization of the history of that era,” Foxman added. “This imagery is deeply disturbing and offensive to Jews and all those who recall the sacrifices Americans and many others had to pay as a result of the Nazi juggernaut.”
As the video circulated online, social media users and Minaj fans criticized the symbolism, with some calling it “disgusting” and “disturbing” while others charging that the rapper was glorifying Nazis
